Unboxing the 6th Edition Collector's Edition - video

I just got home from Frontline Gaming with my Collectors Edition of the Warhammer 40k sixth edition rulebook.

I made an unboxing video of what it looks like, nothing to detailed, but it'll give you an idea of what you get.

Free Heavy Gear Rule Books for Download

As reported by Frontline Gaming's blog, the rules for Heavy Gear Blitz are availible for freee download. 

Check out the above linked article for the details.  Hard to say no to a company that is willing to give you digital versions of rules for free. 

Retail stores may not get Collector's editions of sixth edition Warhammer 40k

Update:  The store I ordered my copy of the collectors edition from claims the below isn't the case for them, as of 6/28/12.  

According to a post up on the Warhammer section of Reddit, a local store was told that all Collector's editions were allocated to web sales.

"My GW rep just called, and told me that Web Sales took ALL the collectors and gamers editions, even though I'd preordered an allotment for my store, the web orders got my supply.

So if you preordered from your FLGS, check to see if they're getting any...
I asked about shortages for the standard book, and he said they still have plenty, and didn't forsee any shortage.
I also asked about FAQs, and he said "No idea, but the marines are pretty well updated in the core book" which was the only thing he'd tried personally, so far."

Hopefully this isn't true.  Otherwise there will be a lot of upset gamers on Friday.

25,000 Hits on Armyundecided - Woot!

I just passed over 25,000 hits this morning.  I've been running the blog for almost two years and it's hard to imagine how in the name of Zeus' butthole it got that much traffic.

Lets take a step back and look at the top 5 blog posts and how many hits they generated.

Number Five - 874 hits

First Warhammer 40k pictures with my new iPhone 4S 

This was a blog post where I took some pictures of a pickup game using the, at the time, new iPhone.  The pics came out much better then I had anticipated.  Most of the pictures on this blog, since I picked up the phone have been using it.  It just takes such nice pictures compared to my point and shoot.

Secret Weapon Minatures - How the washes stack up

I'm a big fan of Secret Weapon Minatures hobby products.  So much so that earlier this year I picked up a set of the entire line of washes.  The benifit is, when I am not sure which color to use, I can try a bunch!

I picked up some fantasy terrain from JR Miniatures and I had some trouble picking out what colors to use.  I decided to do a bit of a test, spraying two models grey and then throwing a few different colors of washes on top to see which I liked. As these are only terrain pieces I really don't want to put a lot of effort in.  The washes give some shading without too much work. 

How I got lucky with 6th edition Warhammer 40k - Allies

I ended up deciding to purge most of my 40k armies a few months ago leaving me with only my Space Wolves and Imperial Guard armies.   One of the rumors we are hearing is that allies are in this next edition.  Most of us who have been around the block remember a few editions ago how you could make some interesting combinations of lists, using allies.  It did help spice up the fluffy side, especially for the imperials.  

I ended up keeping two of the armies that can work together, so right from day one I should be able to try out some interesting combinations.  One of my concerns with 6th edition is how assault may get a bit nastier and vehicles may lose a lot of survivability with the advent of "hull points".  These two could weaken my imperial guard but a splashing of wolves could at least help with the turn 2 orks in my lines.

I think this change may have some interesting consequences for competitive play, good or bad, but it does seem to be a positive change for the garage hammer minded players.  Games Workshop has never really cared about the competitive scene, only selling models.  This should help them move a few more boxes of plastic toy soldiers.
